New Release Book Review: The Chase by Elle Kennedy

ABOUT THE BOOK

THE CHASE

(Briar U, Book 1)
by
Elle Kennedy

Everyone says opposites attract. And they must be right, because there’s no logical reason why I’m so drawn to Colin Fitzgerald. I don’t usually go for tattoo-covered, video-gaming, hockey-playing nerd-jocks who think I’m flighty and superficial. His narrow view of me is the first strike against him. It doesn’t help that he’s buddy-buddy with my brother.
And that his best friend has a crush on me.
And that I just moved in with them.
Oh, did I not mention we’re roommates?
I suppose it doesn’t matter. Fitzy has made it clear he’s not interested in me, even though the sparks between us are liable to burn our house down. I’m not the kind of girl who chases after a man, though, and I’m not about to start. I’ve got my hands full dealing with a new school, a sleazy professor, and an uncertain future. So if my sexy brooding roomie wises up and realizes what he’s missing?
He knows where to find me.

MY THOUGHTS

THE CHASE is the first book in Elle Kennedy’s Briar U series. It’s  Fitzy and Summer’s story. These characters make an appearance in Kennedy’s Off-Campus series but this book reads as a standalone story.

On the whole, I enjoyed this book. I liked Kennedy’s writing style. There are lots of interesting characters and plenty of humorous moments. There's action on the ice for the hockey fans and these students actually spend time in class and studying. I liked the premise of diverse people as Fitzy and Summer coming together; an opposites attract romance is always good for some fireworks, which we definitely get.

On the flip side, there are parts of the book that just did not work for me. Firstly while Fitzy and Summer’s attraction to each other is clear from the outset, the leap from avoidance to togetherness occurs quickly.  I felt like I missed out on seeing their relationship grow.

Secondly, Kennedy tries to provide commentary on several current social issues. They are definitely relevant, and I can see how they might fit within the context of this book but I felt not enough attention was given to them. We get a resolution but they are tied up quickly and neatly packaged. I would have preferred a greater focus on one issue.

I am a fan of the Off-Campus series and I am glad to be back at Briar Uni. I look forward to the next book in this series.
