Book Review: THE F LIST by Alessandra Torre

ABOUT THE BOOK

There was a lot I did to get to this point, to get 42 million followers. Some of it I was proud of, most of it I wasn't.

There was a group of us, all internet celebrities, and everyone wanted in, which is how six of us ended up living in this mansion, a camera always on, the public always watching. Two months and nine carefully scripted TV episodes that would get us more of the three F’s we were desperately chasing.

Fame. Fortune. Followers.

I knew my role. I was Emma, the unlikeable one. The dark villain with the devious smile. The package of dynamite that would blow up any chance of peaceful living and harmony.

Cash knew his role. He was the good guy. The lovable one. The one that everyone, even the darkest cast member of them all, would fall in love with.

They were supposed to just be roles.
None of it was supposed to be real.

My heart didn't get that memo.

MY THOUGHTS

The blurb for THE F LIST by Alessandra Torre sounded great: A villainous heroine brought to heel by love. A ‘good guy’ hero getting entangled with a woman whose determined path cared nothing for the destruction left behind.

This was not the case. There was a disconnect between my expectations from reading the blurb and what this book offers. I was left feeling unfulfilled.

My biggest frustration is that so often Torre touches on the topics and issues that I felt would be explored in greater depth, but her light handling of the plots often diluted them to the point of vapidness. I did not find Emma to be outrageous or villainous; any current Z-list ‘celebrity’ could wipe the floor with her. I felt Cash was aimless and directionless. I don’t think we were given an opportunity to really understand either Emma or Cash. And the ending was just bizarre.

I also found the romance to be flimsy. The seeds of a great romance and a great love were there but instead of nurturing this relationship, Torre just left it unattended – or interrupted it with a pointless reality show scene - and then expected us to believe in a happy ever after.

One character I did love was Vidal Franklin. He was cunning and brutal and a master of playing the Hollywood game. I’ll also give props to the disillusioned Bojan Frost. Both Franklin and Frost came across as much more genuine than Emma or Cash did for me.

Setting aside my opinion of the plot, I felt Torre’s writing style was easy to read and I would consider reading more of her books.

Book Review: WEEKEND WIFE by Erin McCarthy

WW - BT banner

“The perfect, irresistible romantic comedy!” —Erin Nicholas, New York Times bestselling author

WEEKEND WIFE, an all-new sassy and quirky stand-alone rom com from New York Times bestselling author Erin McCarthy, is available now!

WeekendWife FOR WEB

Billionaire businessman in need of a fake fiancée…

It should be the easiest job ever for an out-of-work actress, right?
All I have to do is pose as Grant Caldwell (the Third)’s fiancé for a fancy-pants weekend in the Hamptons. Easy. Wear designer clothing and sip champagne? Don’t mind if I do. Flirting with Grant? It’s so delicious I should be paying him.
Nothing can go wrong as long as I can just keep my hands off of him.
But that’s the hard part. And I do mean hard.
Because Grant is sexy.
And bossy.
And surprisingly sweet, a real rarity in his pretentious family.
Oops. I’m not as good at faking it as I thought. Or maybe they call this method acting. Because it’s getting harder to figure out where my character ends and I begin…
It just might be the role of a lifetime.

MY THOUGHTS

If you’re after something light to read that will lift your mood, give WEEKEND WIFE by Erin McCarthy a go. It’s a lot of fun!

When Grant Caldwell’s professional life is put at risk because his single status is seen as detrimental, he sees no choice but to play along until he gets the top job. He’s certainly angry at being manipulated but he’s already got a prospect for the job of a fiancée for the weekend.

Enter Leah Romano, actress-slash-waitress who is waiting for her big break on Broadway. She’s also the person who’s been serving Grant his pancake breakfast each Wednesday for the last six months.

Grant and Leah work so well as a pair. Beyond the wealth and the good looks, these two talk to each other; they open up, they converse and show their vulnerabilities. Coupled with the physical chemistry between them, this book ticks so many boxes of what I look out for in a romance book.

I definitely recommend this book and I’ll certainly be on the lookout for more of this author’s work.

Book Review: TEMPORARY WIFE TEMPTATION by Jayci Lee

ABOUT THE BOOK

Much more than he bargained for…

“You want me to find you a wife?”

“No. I want you to be my wife.”

Garrett Song is this close to taking the reins of his family’s LA fashion empire…until the Song matriarch insists he marry her handpicked bride first. To block her matchmaking, he recruits Natalie Sobol to pose as his wife. She needs a fake spouse as badly as he does. But when passion burns down their chaste agreement, the flames could destroy them all…

MY THOUGHTS

I will always give books about marriages of convenience and fake relationships a closer look because there’s something about the trope that I find so very appealing. When I came across TEMPORARY WIFE TEMPTATION by Jayci Lee, not only did the set up appeal to me but the cover had Asian people pictured on it. I was hoping – and was rewarded with a story that also delved into Korean culture.

This is a Harlequin Desire title, and I know they follow a formula but I think Lee’s done a great job in balancing the right amount of detail needed to cement the foundation of the story and giving us a very sexual-tension filled  romance between Garret and Natalie. There is certainly a power imbalance on the face of it (he’s the employer, she’s the employee) but it’s never used as tool of manipulation and I do feel Garret and Natalie came together as professional equals; their roles might be different but they were both dedicated, hardworking and high-achievers within their respective professional spectrum.

There is a sense of soap-opera drama in some scenes but I enjoyed them, and as mentioned previously, learning a bit more about some Korean cultural norms was an interesting and welcome addition.

This is the author’s debut novel and I think she’s done marvellously well. I will certainly be looking out for her next book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jayci Lee writes poignant, sexy, and laugh-out-loud romance every free second she can scavenge. She lives in sunny California with her tall-dark-and-handsome husband, two amazing boys with boundless energy, and a fluffy rescue whose cuteness is a major distraction. At times, she cannot accommodate real life because her brain is full of drool worthy heroes and badass heroines clamoring to come to life.

Because of all the books demanding to be written, Jayci writes full-time now, and is semi-retired from her fifteen-year career as a defense litigator. She loves food, wine, and travelling, and incidentally so do her characters. Books have always helped her grow, dream, and heal, and she hopes her books will do the same for you.

Book Review: MISS UNDERSTANDING by Aubrey Bondurant

ABOUT THE BOOK

Liam Davenport is the most infuriating man I’ve ever known – and he’s my boss.

Worse, he’s undeniably sexy. At least until I’m subject to one of his trademark sighs of disapproval. I’m counting the days until I can walk away from this job. But first, I need to survive the trip from hell he’s dragged me on. One entire week with his arrogant smile and my unexpected naughty thoughts.

I might get fired.

He just might be worth it.

Kendall Tate is the most distracting woman I’ve ever met – and she’s my assistant.
She’s irritatingly clever, and much too nice for the likes of me. I need to remain professional, even if the smell of her strawberry lip gloss is my kryptonite. No matter how much I want her, Kendall is off limits.

Growing closer to her might be a mistake.

I might just take the risk.

Available for purchase on Amazon including Kindle Unlimited

MY THOUGHTS

MISS UNDERSTANDING is an example of the kind of romance books I love to read. There’s a credible storyline, the plotting and pacing is spot on, there’s humour peppered throughout, I like the main characters and I think they make a great couple.

Liam Davenport and Kendall Tate are both strong and hard-working individuals. Their underlying vulnerabilities made for complex characters that I was interested in reading about. They often butt heads, making for some very funny scenes, but what I loved about them is that the lines of communication were always open. Yes, there were misunderstandings and hurt feelings but they both actively worked through these times to come to a place of understanding. It’s refreshing to read a romance where the couple act like rational and reasonable adults.

I highly recommend this book and will be eagerly waiting for the next book in this series.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Aubrey Bondurant loves to read, write and travel. Matter of fact many of the travels you read about in her books are based on her trips.

Her writing style is a combination of chick lit and erotic romance or “smutty chick lit” as she calls it. Or “Adult Contemporary Romantic Comedy”.

When she isn’t working full time or spending time with her family, she puts her fingers to keyboard and crafts a story. She only wishes there were more hours in the day!

As a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps, she’s passionate about veteran charities and giving back to the community. She also loves a drooly dog, a great margarita and watching football!

New Release: SHE'S GOT SOUL by Aja

SHE’S GOT SOUL BY AJA

Zola Lewis is many things to many people. She’s a marketing extraordinaire by day, and a podcast host by night. She’s also a devoted daughter, a funny and care giving auntie to her sister’s daughter. But, the one thing she is not, is a wife to a loving husband and she’s beginning to think that could never happen because she’s entirely too opinionated for most men. One night on her live podcast, she experienced a challenging caller who seemed to aggravate her more than a little, and Zola wondered who was more opinionated. Zola or the caller?

Khalil Berry was a bit of a nerd growing up, and as a result, also a bit of a late bloomer. Time not spent with girls allowed him to stick with books. His big brain landed him many opportunities and by his mid-twenties, he’d amassed a fortune from his software apps. The latest app he’s developing requires more hands on research and he decides to do the research himself. First stop, listening to a podcast by a woman talking about women; a topic he was beginning to learn more about since his money seems attracts them all the time. The task was simple, listen and take notes. But, her voice is too melodic and her words, well, let’s just say she didn’t know what she was talking about as far as he was concerned. So he calls in to correct her.

They’re both great at giving a piece of their mind, but can they hand over their well-guarded hearts?

Book Review: WINE & DINE by L.B. Dunbar

About the Book

Dolores Chance.
When I was falling apart, I fell in love.
It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.
I ran away from life and ended up running into…his dog.
Actually, his dog ran into me. I don’t care for dogs.
Then I met the owner.

Garrett Fox.
When my neighbor’s sister came to visit,
I promised to show her around town.
I’m an investor in things, not people, not emotions.
I’m not a fan of love. I’ve been burned before.
Then I met Dolores.

When a sexy mature, man-of-means encounters a silver vixen, healing her broken heart might be worth more than gold.

Romance has no age limit.

My Thoughts

I have really enjoyed L.B Dunbar’s Sexy Silver Foxes series and Wine&Dine is no exception. Dunbar’s books and my reading tastes have crossed paths and we’re at a sweet spot where I am always looking forward to what she will publish next.

Wine&Dine is Dolores Chance’s story. We first met her in Second Chance. She’s a woman who works incredibly hard to remain independent but time, responsibility and admittedly, some apathy means she finds herself taking stock of her life and not liking what she sees. I think Dolores represents many women; that melancholy we feel when we look back and wonder why we gave up things we loved to do. And it’s not just the big things, but the small pleasures in life that have fallen away. She is tired; drained.  How did it come to this? It can be quite a sobering experience.

With a firm push from her brother, Dolores takes the chance to leave her life behind and get out into the wider world. She wants to be a better version of herself, even not knowing what that is.

Enter Garrett Fox. He is more interested in building his bank balance than in building relationships. Like any 50 year old, he’s been shaped by life experience and while his attraction to Dolores is strong, learning to trust again will take a giant leap of belief.

I really savoured this relationship. As Dolores and Garrett reveal themselves little by little, I felt invested in their relationship. I was cheering them on because I could see how good they were for each other. And let’s not forget the physical attraction, folks. These two gave us some hot and steamy times!

I haven’t read all of Dunbar’s books but for me she has found a niche writing romances for older characters. I hope she continues to do so.

About the Author

I’ve been accused of having an over-active imagination. To my benefit, this imagination has created over twenty novels, including the creation of a small-town world (Sensations Collection), rock star mayhem (Legendary Rock Star series), MMA chaos (Paradise Stories), rom-com for the over forty (The Sex Education of M.E.), and a suspenseful island for redemption (The Island Duet).

My alter ego, elda lore, creates magical romance through mythological retellings (Modern Descendants). My life revolves around a deep love of reading about fairy tales, medieval knights, regency debauchery, and strong alpha males.

I love a deep belly laugh, a strong hug, and an occasional margarita. My other loves include being mother to four grown children and wife to the one and only.

And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

MY REVIEW

I loved Shen’s 2018 releases; MIDNIGHT BLUE and DIRTY HEADLINES were some of my top reads last year, but THE KISS THIEF has fallen woefully short of my expectations.

Apart from a few instances where Shen’s writing shines in a manner I know she is capable of, I found little to like about this book.

The Kiss Thief just felt wrong. There were holes in storylines, character credibility was just about non-existent, character behaviour was inconsistent, language often swerved into purple prose territory and there was always this niggling feeling in the back of my mind that this book would play out much better if it was set hundreds of years in the past.

I think a reread of one of Shen’s titles that I enjoy is in order for me to regain my equilibrium.

Mine is only one opinion, and there are plenty of favourable reviews that offer alternate views.

Book Review (& Excerpt): ACHE FOR YOU by J. T. Geissinger

AFY BLOG TOUR.jpg

In this fairy tale with a sexy twist, she’s a penniless San Francisco seamstress. He’s the king of Italian couture.

Who’s got designs on whom?

Ache For You, an all-new steamy standalone in the Slow Burn Series from J.T. Geissinger is available NOW!

Geissinger-Ache for You-25867-CV-FT-V4

Boutique owner Kimber DiSanto has seen better days. She’s been dumped at the altar by Prince Charmless, her business went up in flames (literally), and now she’s stuck in Florence, Italy, with an ice-queen stepmother, to try to save her late father’s failing dress shop. Only one thing could make it worse: another man in her life. The arrogant Italian fashion tycoon offering to buy her father’s shop is as rich as he is sexy, and their attraction is off the charts. But Kimber’s not about to get burned again.

Women don’t say no to Matteo Moretti—and certainly not with Kimber’s stinging precision. With all the heat and fury sparking between them, Matteo can’t resist baiting the gorgeous American. His plan? Win her over one scorching kiss at a time.

Kimber tells herself it’s all just a game. That her broken heart isn’t in danger, and that Matteo’s touch does not make her Lady Land dance with joy. But sometimes it takes the fieriest of enemies to turn a fantasy into a real-life romance.

My Thoughts

ACHE FOR YOU by J.T. Geissinger is the story of a woman whose life is unravelling in all manner of ways. Kimber DiSanto needs to keep her wits about her and stop her life from going down the gurgler. What she does not need is exploding ovaries and horny thoughts when she crosses paths with the drool-worthy Matteo Moretti.

This was a straightforward read for me. It was funny and heartfelt for the majority of the book. Kimber and Matteo’s romance is sizzling, and Matteo is a deliciously dirty talker. However, I finished the book with many unanswered questions about Kimber and Matteo; I did not get to know these characters as much as I would have liked to. I felt the book often shifted focus on secondary characters that turned it into a farce. It was unnecessary and ultimately diluted the romance for me.

ACHE FOR YOU is part of the author’s Slow Burn series. While the story had what I deem an extended period of verbal and physical foreplay, I would not class it as a slow burn romance.

Overall an enjoyable romantic comedy and one that dog lovers will more than likely love.

Excerpt

With my chin held high, I go over to him, push him out of the doorway, and slam the door in his face.
The door instantly swings back open.
Shit. No lock.
“You know, hate and love aren’t so different, bella.”
He’s being philosophical now, pursing his pretty mouth and gazing at the ceiling, as if viewing the stars.
I could kill him.
“Why do you enjoy torturing me? Are you some kind of sadist?”
He ignores me, naturally, and continues his little Socratic speech. “They’re two sides of the same coin, really. Passion, obsession, sweaty palms, and a racing heart. Lost sleep.” He slides his gaze over to the cheese and salami on the dresser. “A poor appetite.”
“You want a poor appetite? I’ll give you a poor appetite. I’ll take that salami and wedge it so far down your throat you won’t be able to eat ever again.”
Amused by my fury, he smiles. “Passion,” he reminds me, smug as shit.
I look around for something to throw at him.
“Let’s call a truce.” He strolls forward, hands in his pockets.
As if I’ll feel safer that way.
“No truce. No way. And you’re the one who started this war, remember?”
He makes a face, like he’s doubtful.
“Yes, you. Wait, why am I even talking to you? You fake kissed me!”
“Did I?”
“Yes! You admitted you did!”
“Hmm. I don’t recall that.”
“So we’ll add dementia to your long list of problems.”
By now he’s trapped me at the edge of the bed, advancing so stealthily I hardly noticed it, which was probably his dastardly plan all along.
I stand my ground and flatten my hand in the center of his chest, bracing my arm so he can’t move forward. “I’m not a joke,” I say, my voice raw. “I’m not a plaything.”
“I never said you were.”
Under my palm, his heart is a jackhammer. We do the hate breathing at each other again, which apparently is becoming our thing. Then we do the hate eye fucking again, which is definitely becoming our thing.
He says softly, “You’re giving me grief about how I look at you? You should see your eyes right now.” His voice drops an octave. “So dirty, bella. So very, very dirty.”
“I’m not selling the company, no matter how much you try to sex it out of me.”
He quirks an eyebrow. “Sex it out of you?” As I watch with ragged breath, he sinks his teeth into his full lower lip. “Now that sounds interesting. Let’s discuss.”
“You’re a pig.”
“And yet you want me.”
“You’re unbelievable!”
“Yes, women have told me that before. Usually right after they come.”
I can’t even with this guy!
Then it’s like he remembers something. He looks around, frowning. “What are you doing in here?”
“What does it look like I’m doing? Trying to get rid of you!”
He looks at the wad of sheets in the corner. He looks at the freshly made bed. Then he looks back at me. The smile that breaks over his face is breathtaking.
“My darling ex-stepsister. Are you moving in?”
Very deliberately, I slide my hand up his chest until I reach his neck. Then I grasp his throat—lightly, but enough to let him know I mean it.
His skin is hot to the touch, and his throat is strong. Thick. It makes me think of other hot, thick body parts.
I officially hate myself.
He lifts his brows, obviously amused. “You have the most interesting internal conversations. Are you going to choke me?”
I growl. It sounds silly, like a kitten trying to be scary.
Matteo leans forward. My arm is still locked at the elbow, so it puts more pressure around his throat. Holding my gaze, he says softly, “Go ahead. I know you want to.”
Boy, do I. I curl my other hand around his neck so now I’ve got him good and surrounded. I feel his pulse, beating hard against my palms. It’s weirdly arousing.
Intently watching my face, he whispers, “Those eyes.”
