New Release: CONFESSIONS IN B-FLAT by Donna Hill

CONFESSIONS IN B-FLAT

by
DONNA HILL

Essence bestselling author Donna Hill brings us an emotional love story set against the powerful backdrop of the civil rights movement that gripped a nation. A story as timely as it is timeless...

The year is 1963. In Harlem, the epicenter of Black culture, the fight for equality has never been stronger. The time is now. Enough is enough. Yet even within its ranks, a different kind of battle rages. Love thy neighbor? Or rise up against your oppressors?

Jason Tanner has just arrived in New York to help spread the message of his mentor, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., of passive resistance, while beat poet Anita Hopkins believes the teachings of Malcolm X with all her heart: that the way to true freedom is “by any means necessary.” When Jason sees Anita perform her poetry at the iconic B-Flat lounge, he’s transfixed. And Anita has never met anyone who can match her wit for wit like this…

One movement, two warring ideologies—can love be enough to unite them?

Confessions in B-Flat is a celebration of the hard-won victories of those who came before us, and a stark reminder of just how far we still have to go.

New Release: SAY HELLO, KISS GOODBYE by Jacquelyn Middleton

From the award-winning author of UNTIL THE LAST STAR FADES,
comes a sexy story of love, second chances, gratitude, and finding beauty in the broken and the forgotten.

Will her fling become his forever?

Leia Scott has sworn off love. Fresh from a messy, public divorce from her hockey player ex, the twenty-six-year-old fashion designer temporarily trades New York for London to heal and embrace her freedom. Her vow? To protect her heart, steer clear of relationships, and say yes to flings without strings. She throws herself into designing upcycled dresses and exploring London with her sister. But Leia's carefully curated plan encounters a flirty complication with an irresistible British accent.

Wealthy, charming, and devastatingly attractive, Tarquin Balfour is tired of meaningless hookups and dates that go nowhere. For years, he has played the bon viveur with reckless abandon, throwing decadent parties, sleeping with a parade of women, and diving into extreme sports around the globe. But now the young property developer wants more. He craves love and commitment, to prove his kind heart matters more than the abundance of zeroes attached to his bank balance. Struggling with undiagnosed depression, Tarquin worries he'll never find The One...until he meets his princess, a fashion designer named Leia.

Afraid of falling in love and fearful of being alone, Leia and Tarquin enter into an entanglement that threatens to hurt them both.

"Leia and Tarquin's chemistry sizzles…this sultry, yet sweetly heartfelt romance is a winner. Fans of contemporary romance will rejoice in this story of falling in love through and despite mental illness."
 -- Publishers Weekly's BookLife 'Editor's Pick'

"Sex scenes are steamy, well written, and anti-shaming. Humor enlivens the drama nicely...SAY HELLO, KISS GOODBYE offers well-drawn, multilayered characters and standout, sex-positive romance."
 -- Kirkus Reviews

"As steamy as it is heartwarming...the two main characters are undeniably endearing...mental health issues are explored with the appropriate gravitas and the theme of gratitude is strong throughout. Romance fans will be grateful they picked up this novel. With SAY HELLO, KISS GOODBYE, Middleton has written a winner."

Without thinking too hard about it, Maya rose to her feet and grabbed Rune by the collar of his jacket, pulling him close. “How about a fake kiss?” she asked quickly. “Just make it look good from a distance.”

He flashed her a pirate grin and cupped her face with his free hand. “My pleasure. I’m an excellent fake kisser.”

“Come on, hurry.”

He bent his head over hers, but he still didn’t go for the kiss. “You can’t hurry a fake kiss, or it will look fake. We’re flirting, we’re completely caught up in each other, we don’t even care that we’re drifting on the open ocean. Keep looking at me, just like that except without the ‘what the hell are you talking about’ expression.”

She smothered a laugh and relaxed her face into a dazzled smile. As if Rune was the most wonderful thing in the world, better than chocolate and bubble baths combined.

He blinked, as if she’d momentarily thrown him off his game with her smile. A personal triumph, she figured.

“That’s…good,” he said, a little more strained than before.

For a fake kiss, he sure was overthinking it. They needed to get this thing done. She took command and wrapped her hand around the back of his neck. Tugging him down, she offered him her mouth. “Let’s do this,” she hissed. “Tick-tock.”

Honestly, why did she always have to be the one with any common sense? If those men onshore had binoculars, they were already watching. To throw them off, she only had a few moments. If the men thought they’d been busted, they might rework their entire comms system. The lead would be worthless. The source would be burned. The case back to square one.

And then all thoughts of logic flew from her mind as Rune claimed her lips with a kiss that sent shock waves through her system. Warmth…sizzle…sunshine…all of it swirled together in a rush of brilliant pleasure. His lips were firm and generous at the same time, as if they were inviting her into his world. A world where she would be queen and he would be whatever she needed.

A kind of exhilaration swept through her and she parted her lips for more. He gave it to her, sweeping his tongue inside the cave of her mouth, where every surface tingled and warmed at his touch.

Fake kiss, my ass.

This was the real thing and she couldn’t get enough of it. She drank him in as if she’d been starving for this, pining for it. Her mind—always working, always on guard—let go like an anchor releasing her to drift on the current. She lost herself in the flood of pure physical joy.

She staggered as the boat got slammed with a supersized wave. Rune held her tight so she didn’t lose her balance. “I need to steer this thing,” he murmured against her lips before turning back to the helm.

“Yes. Yeah. Of course.” She ran her tongue across her lips, tasting salt from the spray and sweet from Rune. She plopped down onto the bench as he wrestled with the wheel. Picking up her binoculars, she focused on the spot where the two men had been.

They were gone—or maybe her angle had changed and she couldn’t see them anymore.

She dropped her glasses and sighed. Hopefully she hadn’t messed anything up by making them suspicious. “Go ahead and pick up speed. Let’s keep going toward Mount Sage for a bit.”

“Roger that.”

Was his voice a little gruffer than usual? Was it the effect of the salt in the air?

He put the boat in gear and they cruised farther into the bay. She watched the little cove as it receded into the distance, swallowed up by the greater landscape of forests and rugged outcroppings.

What now? How to handle this? She and Rune had kissed, and there was no way she could forget about it the way she had when she was a kid.

Maybe never mention it again?

Or maybe do it again?

The tempting thought hovered out there like the promise of an ice cream sundae after a long week. Treat yo-self, she could imagine her cousin Reecie in Anchorage saying. Go for it, Kate would urge. I knew it, Jessica would say.

“Tell me when you’re ready to head back,” Rune said. “It’s your call.” His voice had returned to normal. She wondered what he was thinking about this situation. Then again, he didn’t overthink things like she did. He probably wasn’t worried about it at all. He probably kissed people all the time—all those non-girlfriend “girls” he’d talked about.

“I will,” she told him. “Give it a few more minutes.”

“The other thing is your call too,” Rune said softly, his attention still on the choppy water ahead.

“What are you talking about?”

“I know you’re trying to decide what to do about that kiss. I can see your wheels spinning from here.”

“I’m not—okay, I am. I didn’t intend for it to be like that.”

“It’s my fault.” His voice shifted to a jaunty cheerfulness. “My pride was hurt that you forgot the first kiss. I was aiming for ‘best kiss.’ One that you wouldn’t forget. That’s all.”

It wasn’t all. She could hear it in his voice. It was so much more complicated than that. Friendship, attraction, sizzle…all that, lined up against her better judgment. But even so, it touched her that he was trying to make the whole thing easier for her.

Best kiss? Isn’t that a little arrogant?” She adopted a teasing tone to match his.

“Second best? Third? Just tell me it wasn’t the worst. Gotta start somewhere.”

“It wasn’t the worst.”

That was as far as she could go right now.

And maybe it was the best. Because right at this moment, she couldn’t think of any other specific kiss that might compete with it.

Book Review: THE STRANGER IN MY BED by Karen King

The Stranger In My Bed

Karen King

On Sale Date: November 23, 2020

‘We have a patient who has been involved in a serious accident. We believe he’s your husband.’

When Freya first met Phil, she thought he was the man of her dreams. He bought her roses every week, booked surprise trips to sun-soaked destinations, and showed her affection like she’d never experienced before. But over time the dream had become a violent nightmare. And now Freya is packing her bags, knowing it’s time she escaped their increasingly broken marriage.

But then Freya gets a visit from the police. Phil’s been in a horrific car crash and – as he comes around – it becomes clear that remembers nothing since their blissful honeymoon two years before, back when their relationship was perfect. All he wants is to be happily married again.

Freya knows giving him another chance could be dangerous. But now he’s the one who needs her, it’s a chance to turn the tables, and to change the outcome of their relationship once and for all. After all, he will only know what she chooses to tell him…

MY THOUGHTS

This is the first book I have read by Karen King. THE STRANGER IN MY BED is the author’s first foray into writing psychological thrillers.

Phil and Freya Keegan have been married for two years when a car accident wipes Phil’s memory of the last two years – their entire marriage. To him, he and Freya are much in love and have just returned from their honeymoon to start married life. For Freya, the reality is that she is now at a crossroads. Their marriage was toxic. Phil’s abusive behavior had reached the point where Freya was going to leave him – in fact, she was on her way out the door when the police arrived to tell her about the accident. Now she finds herself confronted by a seemingly different Phil. One who is kind, and caring, and is shocked when she tells him about his past behaviour. On top of this, there is an external threat to one of them. The accident was caused by a deliberate act of sabotage. It was Phil’s car, but they both drive it. Who was the real intended victim?

King has written several books in other genres, and her general writing skills show in this book. This book is easy to read, the prose moves the story along, and when I reached the end, I had no outstanding questions about any of the events that were mentioned in the book.

Having said this, what I did find missing was the tension, and fear, and intensity needed in a thriller to make you want to keep turning those pages to find out what happens next. This book offers no real surprises for anyone who regularly reads thrillers. I felt most twists were obvious before they were finally revealed. I also struggled to understand some of the reactions of the main characters. Their thoughts were logical but this logic came across as clinical and emotionless, and, in Freya’s case highly questionable.  I don’t need to like every character I read about but I need to feel something for them, and neither Phil nor Freya invoked anything in me.

My understanding is that King already has another thriller in the works. I would be keen to read it to see where her development as a thriller writer takes her.

EXCERPT

After my short trip home to my apartment, I showered and ordered Chinese food. “Cookies. I need cookies.”

Decision made, I pulled ingredients from my pantry: flour, old-fashioned oats, brown sugar, and raisins. The doorbell rang. I glanced at my watch. “That was quick.” I’d just ordered the food fifteen minutes ago. The bell rang again. “Coming, coming.” I grabbed my wallet, rushed to the entrance, and yanked open the door.

Instead of my usual pimply-faced, teenage guy, Roland leaned against the doorframe. The three-piece suit he’d worn earlier had been replaced by a denim shirt. A liberal number of buttons were undone to reveal his hard chest. “Rola—” Before I could finish his name, he rushed me, cupped my jaw, pressed me into the wall, and kissed me senseless. The door slammed behind us. He lifted me in the air, and I wrapped my legs around his waist, kissing him with equal intensity. Somehow, he walked us to the couch. I pushed myself up and arched my back while he stared down at me as if I were a dream. His dream. My breath stalled in my lungs. I was equally pleased and dismayed. I needed to focus on making partner, not being his dream girl. This thing, this attraction we had for each other, wasn’t a relationship. It was a long-standing booty call. Yes, a little over a year ago we mutually decided to make our booty calls exclusive with occasional trips out of town. But one of us would stop it when the time was right. Most likely, me. I cleared my throat, my chest now heaving under his intense gaze.

“What are you doing here?”

“I needed to see you.” “But it’s Monday.”

He shrugged. “I needed to see you. I think our seeing each other only on Tuesdays and Saturdays is a stupid rule, anyway.” He lowered himself beside me, reached for the remote and muted the television. “How’re you holding up?” His thumb grazed my lips. I shivered from his warm touch.

“Some days are better than others.” I pushed him off and scooted away. “The caramel macchiato helped.” He hooked his leg around mine and pulled me closer to face him, all the while giving me the infamous Roland Hill look. The one he used to cross-examine witnesses, eyes narrowed, lips pinched, and head tilted. The subtle, yet stern look that forced a person to confess all. I was usually immune, but today it worked on me. “Okay, I’m a hot mess. Jeanie, my daddy’s wife, is stumbling around like a zombie. And something is off with Ryder. She’s hiding something from me. Whenever I call, she’s in a rush to get off the phone.”

Roland massaged my shoulders. “People deal with grief differently. Maybe you remind her of your father?” I shook my head and leaned against his chest. “No, I don’t think that’s it. The girl has been my shadow since she was three years old and they moved in with us. We usually talk every day. No.” I shook my head again. “Something’s up. But I’ll see them for the reading of the will on Thursday.”

Maybe I shouldn’t wait until then, I thought. I could pop by unannounced. Like lover boy here. We had rules of engagement, and for the most part, we stuck to them. Rule number one never go to his house. It was a rule I created because his neighbor is the father of the biggest gossip in our office: Katy, our paralegal. She didn’t live with her parents but was at her parents’ house often enough to know Roland’s comings and goings. Not to mention she had the hots for him. One word whispered about our affair could mean the end of my chances to make partner. Although fraternizing was technically allowed, it was generally frowned upon. Not to mention generally women tend to not come out on top when affairs are discovered. Roland would get a slap on the wrist and a high five when no one was looking. I would either be frozen out by my coworkers or blocked from any real promotions or exciting cases until I got the hint and resigned. The very same situation happened to a friend of mine from law school. I’d be damned if my career got iced because I couldn’t control my hormones.

Review: PRETENDING by Holly Bourne

 ABOUT THE BOOK

Pretending : A Novel

Holly Bourne

On Sale Date: November 17, 2020

*

In this hilarious and heartbreaking debut novel perfect for fans of Fleabag, a woman struggling to move on after a traumatic relationship pretends to be “the perfect girl” in an act of vengeance that goes awry when she finds herself emotionally compromised.

He said he was looking for a 'partner in crime' which everyone knows is shorthand for 'a woman who isn't real'.

April is kind, pretty, and relatively normal - yet she can't seem to get past date five. Every time she thinks she's found someone to trust, they reveal themselves to be awful, leaving her heartbroken. And angry. Until she realizes that what men are really looking for is Gretel.

Gretel is perfect - beautiful but low maintenance, sweet but never clingy, sexy but not a slut. She's a Regular Everyday Manic Pixie Dream Girl Next Door With No Problems.

When April starts pretending to be Gretel, dating becomes much more fun - especially once she reels in the unsuspecting Joshua. Finally, April is the one in control, but can she control her own feelings? And as she and Joshua grow closer, how long will she be able to keep pretending?

MY THOUGHTS

This is the second book I’ve read by Holly Bourne and as I reflect on the first – The Places I’ve Cried In Public – and this one - PRETENDING – I can see similarities in the narratives as well as my reactions to them.

Bourne writes books that make it difficult for readers to remain aloof; she writes about sensitive topics with such rawness that I can’t help be invested in the emotional journey of the characters. I find myself thinking about the surface and underlying messages Bourne is writing about, and I like that she makes me stop and think about how I would react if confronted in certain situations.

For all this, I found PRETENDING to be a disappointing read for one very simple and very important reason. Not once did any of these characters think about or do anything to help themselves reach a point where they liked themselves; where they were content with themselves or the selves they were working towards being. Instead, the key message that I got from reading this book was all about the importance of finding and keeping “the one” to avoid being lonely and alone. How utterly depressing that with all they go through, April, her flatmate Megan and other female characters were striving for was the approval of someone else – a man.

Bourne’s writing can tug at the heartstrings. It can make you laugh as well as bring out the most cynical side of you. This book has so many important things to say but, in my opinion, she focused on the wrong thing and as a result, the power of her intended message is diminished.

I do think the book is worth reading for the messages that it is trying to convey. And while this was just an okay read overall, I would not discourage anyone - especially men - from giving it a go
