April Release & Excerpt: THE INNOCENT'S FORGOTTEN WEDDING by Lynne Graham

THE INNOCENT’S FORGOTTEN WEDDING by Lynne Graham

The Italian husband she can’t remember…or resist!

After a terrible car crash, Brooke can’t remember her own name—much less her wedding day! Finding irresistible Lorenzo Tassini at her bedside—and a gold band on her finger—is shocking.

Honor-bound to care for his estranged wife, Lorenzo whisks her to his luxury Tuscan villa. But Brooke’s nothing like Lorenzo remembers! Her sweetness surprises him, as does the chemistry between them, blazing like never before. Stunned to discover her virginity, Lorenzo must uncover the secrets of the woman wearing his ring…

EXCERPT

Early the following morning, alarm bells rang and lights flashed from the machinery by the bed.

The woman came awake and went into panic, eyes focusing on an unfamiliar room and then on the arrival of two nurses, their faces both concerned and excited at the same time. She clawed at the breathing tube in her throat because she couldn’t speak and the women tried to both restrain and soothe her, telling her over and over again that the doc-tor was coming, everything would be all right and that there was nothing to worry about. She thought they were crazy. Her body wouldn’t move. She could only move one hand and her arm felt as if it didn’t belong to her. How could she possibly have nothing to worry about? Why were they talking nonsense? Did they think she was stupid?

The panic kept on clawing at her, even after the doctor arrived and the breathing tube was removed. He kept on asking her questions, questions she couldn’t answer until she couldn’t hide from the truth any longer. She didn’t know who she was. What was her name? She didn’t know why she was lying in a hospital bed. She didn’t have a last memory to offer because her mind was a blank, a complete blank. It was a ridiculous relief to receive an approving nod when she evidently got the name of the Prime Minister right and contrived to name colours correctly.

‘What happened to me?’ she whispered brokenly, her breath rasping. ‘Have I been ill?’

‘You were in an accident.’ The doctor paused there, exchanging a glance with the staff surrounding the bed.

‘What’s my name?’ she asked shakily.

‘Your name is Brooke… Brooke Tassini.’ The name meant absolutely nothing to her, didn’t even sound slightly familiar.

‘Your husband will be here very soon.’ Brooke’s eyes widened to their fullest extent in shock. ‘I have a husband?’

For some reason, the nurses smiled. ‘Oh, yes, you have a husband.’

‘A very handsome husband,’ one of the women added.

Brooke stared down at her bare wedding finger. She was married. Oh, my goodness, she was married. Did she have children? she asked. No…no children as far as they knew, they said, and a tinge of relief threaded through the panic she was only just holding at bay. Then she felt guilty about that sense of relief. She liked children, didn’t she? But it was scary enough to have a husband she didn’t remember—it would be simply appalling if she had contrived to forget her children as well.

Lynne Graham lives in Northern Ireland and has been a keen romance reader since her teens. Happily married, Lynne has five children. Her eldest is her only natural child. Her other children, who are every bit as dear to her heart, are adopted. The family has a variety of pets, and Lynne loves gardening, cooking, collecting allsorts and is crazy about every aspect of Christmas.

Welcome back to Weight Expectations, where the unexpected is likely to happen.

Cutie and the Beast, an all-new hilarious romantic standalone from M.E. Carter, is LIVE!

perf6.000x9.000.indd

Living with her mother seemed like a good idea at the time. But Elliott Donovan’s living arrangements are not working for her anymore. Desperate to get back on her financial feet after a divorce and out from under her mother’s thumb, Elliott takes a job in the child care center at Weight Expectations, a local gym.

It has everything she needs – family friendly hours, more pay than she expected, and a super cute trainer who just happens to have part of his house for rent.

Abel DiSoto was living the good life until his wife walked out taking half of the family income with her. The blow to his ego was bad enough, but after a fire at the gym scattered Abel’s clients, and consequently his commissions, he’s stuck figuring out how to make ends meet, too. Renting out the master suite of his house to his new co-worker seems like an easy solution. They’re both mature adults, they both have eight-year-old daughters, and their work schedules coordinate so they can lend each other a helping hand to ease the burden of single parenthood.

The only downside? Living like a blended family when you’re not actually a family can present some challenges.

Welcome back to Weight Expectations, where the unexpected is likely to happen.
‘Cutie and the Beast’ is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book #3 in the Cipher Office series, Knitting in the City World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

About M.E. Carter

My name is M.E. Carter and I have no idea how I ended up writing books. I’m more of a story teller (the more exaggerated the better) and I happen to know people who helped me get those stories on paper. I love reading (read almost 200 books last year), hate working out (but I do it anyway because my trainer makes me), love food (but hate what it does to my butt) and love traveling to non-touristy places most people never see. I live in Houston with my four kids, Mary, Elizabeth, Carter and Bug, who was just a twinkle in my eye when I came up with my pen name. Yeah, I’ll probably have to pay for his therapy someday for being left out.

Book Review: STATE OF THE UNION by Nick Hornby

ABOUT THE BOOK

Tom and Louise meet in the pub opposite their counsellor's office ten minutes before their session is about to start. Their marriage is in a state of crisis because Louise has been unfaithful, after a long period in which Tom wasn't interested in having sex with her at all.

The plan in these ten minutes is to talk about the agenda for the session, , what they talked about last week, what they never talk about, and what is wrong with the couple whose counselling slot immediately precedes their own. Frequently they talk about things that are really not important to their difficulties but which animate and provoke them anyway.

In this way, we learn about the history and the future of a marriage. Anyone who has ever been in a relationship made more complicated by time, and familiarity, will recognise themselves in this brilliantly funny comedy written by one of our most beloved writers, one who captures relationships like few others.

MY THOUGHTS

I read somewhere that this book was written after the TV series of the same name was produced, and that makes sense. Virtually all extraneous detail is removed as the focus is directed on Tom and Louise and the dialogue between them.

In the 130-odd pages of the book, we get plenty of witty and biting and sarcastic talk as Tom and Louise try to break through the issues they face personally and within their marriage that has led them to marriage counselling.

The reason this gets 4 instead of 5 stars from me, is that I do think the TV series brings this story to life. Chris O'Dowd and Rosamund Pike bring the characters to life, and it's them and the location that were in my mind as I read this book. I am not sure how invested I would be in this book if i had not already seen the TV series.

Book Review: HAVEN'T THEY GROWN by Sophie Hannah

ABOUT THE BOOK

All Beth has to do is drive her son to his Under-14s away match, watch him play, and bring him home.

Just because she knows her ex-best friend lives near the football ground, that doesn't mean she has to drive past her house and try to catch a glimpse of her. Why would Beth do that, and risk dredging up painful memories? She hasn't seen Flora for twelve years. She doesn't want to see her today, or ever again.

But she can't resist. She parks outside the open gates of Newnham House, watches from across the road as Flora and her children Thomas and Emily step out of the car. Except... There's something terribly wrong. Flora looks the same, only older. As Beth would have expected. It's the children. Twelve years ago, Thomas and Emily were five and three years old. Today, they look precisely as they did then.

They are still five and three. They are Thomas and Emily without a doubt - Hilary hears Flora call them by their names - but they haven't changed at all.

They are no taller, no older... Why haven't they grown?

MY THOUGHTS

I am struggling to rate HAVEN'T THEY GROWN, so I've decided to go straight down the middle with 2.5 out of 5 stars.

The blurb certainly caught my interest: How *do* you explain seeing young children that do not seem to have aged in 12 years? Wanting to discover the answer is what had me turning the pages.

If I take all the individual components that led to the conclusion, I could convince myself that most are probable, but putting it all together and believing it as a whole was a hard sell.  I did not buy into it.

In general, I found the writing engaging, if a tad repetitive at the start. This was my first Sophie Hannah book, but I am interested enough to want to read more of her work.

A painting, a panic room, a thief, and her lover … whose job is to catch her.

3) She’s a thief – kind of.

Darius designs security systems for Cipher Security, and the strange and remarkable woman he met the night the painting was stolen is as intriguing a mystery as his hunt for the thief is.

But the lady has no filter, and she knows she can’t lie to the man who looks like a Disney Prince and kisses like fairytales are true, so she runs from the one person who may actually see her as the heroine of her own story.

CS02-TEASER02

MY THOUGHTS

CODE OF HONOR is only the second April White book I have read, and once again she has created some unique characters whose adventures I am on board for. This time around it involves Anna Collins just doing a spot of stealing of a painting from a private home. To succeed, she needs to find a hole in Darius Masoud’s security system.  And she does.

I really enjoyed the cat and mouse game played by Anna and Darius. Their attraction is palpable and immediate but circumstances exist that means acting on the attraction will have wider consequences. Written with dual points of view, readers are never left wondering what Anna and Darius are feeling. And when they have several deeply personal and painfully honest conversations with each other, you can feel how invested they want to be in each other.

I am no fan of illegal activity but there’s a perverse side of me that just loves a good heist in a book or movie, and when it’s weaved through a real life occurrence – here it’s the theft of artworks from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum – I am sold. I felt the fictional mystery was credibly intertwined with the known facts and it held my interest.

Overall, I’d class this a good read. I liked it. It’s certainly better than average but there are some things that didn’t work for me.  Firstly, there’s some literal toilet humour that I thought was disgusting and entirely pointless. I put the book down for several days, wary that the story would continue with such juvenile antics. Thankfully, it did not.

Secondly, I found the story was repetitive. Both the mystery of the paintings and Darius questioning his values – albeit both very important matters - did feel belaboured because we were in a loop going over the same information with no forward momentum.

Those of you familiar with Penny Reid’s book, especially the Quinn Sullivan and Dan O’Malley characters, will be happy to know they make an appearance. I think White does a great job in her Cipher Security books of staying true to the characters we have previously met.

The only thing left to wonder is when White will be publishing the next book in the Cipher Security series. I am looking forward to it.

Book Review: ONE MOMENT PLEASE by Amy Daws

Kiss

That awkward moment when an ER doctor has to inform you that you’re pregnant…with his baby.

One Moment Please-front-size down

That awkward moment when an ER doctor has to inform you that you’re pregnant…with his baby.

Three things Lynsey Jones knows about the hot doctor: he’s grouchy, an arrogant jerk, and strangely obsessed with pie.
Three things Dr. Josh Richardson knows: he doesn’t talk about his past, he doesn’t do relationships, and the crazy girl in the hospital cafeteria who ate a fistful of French silk pie…is annoyingly irresistible.
After a chance meetup at a bar and a heated cab ride together, things come to a head and now instead of hating each other, they’re horizontal in a bed.
Three months later, the weird cafeteria stalker who crept out of Josh’s house like a thief in the night, winds up as his patient in the ER after her Tinder date from hell.
The doctor is prepared to keep it cool and professional. That is until her bloodwork reveals she’s pregnant.
What really throws him for a loop…is the surprise baby…is his.

MY THOUGHTS

This book was just what the Doctor ordered. ONE MOMENT PLEASE by Amy Daws offers so much: fun, humour and laughter; love, romance and scorching hot sexy times; sweetness, vulnerability and healing tears.

I thoroughly enjoyed the rollercoaster ride that is Lynsey and Josh’s relationship. I could relate to the characters, and importantly, I liked them. I liked them so much! Their feelings and sensitivities in the face of some serious issues did have me crying at times but I never felt like the story was mired in pointless angst. It was an emotional journey for the characters as much as it was for me.

For fans of previous books in this series, we get to revisit with other characters, and they all do a fabulous job of adding to the story with their quirky and outlandish personalities. I have no idea what her future writing plans are but surely Dean needs his own happy ever after? We need more!

Daws has done such a great job with the Wait With Me series. Each book gets better and better. I felt the timeline and pacing of the story flowed incredibly well, and Daws has once again shown how well she can balance the fun times with deeper themes in her writing. Highly recommended. And yes, this book is a stand alone, but do yourself a favour and check out the other books in this series.

Book Review: JANE IN LOVE by Rachel Givney

ABOUT THE BOOK

'If Jane Austen had the choice between the heart and the pen, what do you think she would do?'

At age twenty-eight, Jane Austen should be seeking a suitable husband, but all she wants to do is write. She is forced to take extreme measures in her quest to find true love - which lands her in the most extraordinary of circumstances.

Magically, she finds herself in modern-day England, where horseless steel carriages line the streets and people wear very little clothing. She forms a new best friend in fading film star Sofia Wentworth, and a genuine love interest in Sofia's brother Fred, who has the audacity to be handsome, clever and kind-hearted.

She is also delighted to discover that she is now a famous writer, a published author of six novels and beloved around the globe. But as Jane's romance with Fred blossoms, her presence in the literary world starts to waver. She must find a way to stop herself disappearing from history before it's too late.

A modern-day reimagining of the life of one of the world's most celebrated writers, this wonderfully witty romantic comedy offers a new side to Jane's story, which sees her having to choose between true love in the present and her career as a writer in the past.

MY THOUGHTS

JANE IN LOVE by Rachel Givney was just what I needed to temporarily take me away from these stressful times and let me live in a story with one of my favourite authors.

With bleak matrimonial prospects, Jane is very close to permanent spinsterhood. A last ditch attempt to find a husband finds Jane visits a matchmaker and soon after, a twist in time sees Jane land in current day London.

JANE IN LOVE is certainly a story about Jane finding the romantic love that has alluded her, but it’s not solely about the romance. Liked many renown artists and authors, the real life Austen never saw fame, fortune or celebrity. She’s achieved something she could never imagine and Jane’s quiet delight at discovering her ever present popularity is very touching.

Also enjoyable was Jane’s introduction to modern life. I loved the descriptions Jane gives items she sees; cars are horseless steel carriages, pens are self-inking quills. And there’s a wonderful scene where Jane even stocks up on sugar when she sees how inexpensive it is.
JANE IN LOVE manages to be a charming and light-hearted read while also cleverly providing a critique of modern day life.

I listened to the audio version, excellently narrated by Amber McMahon. Amber created distinctive voice for all the characters, and imbued in them the emotion and personality that brought these characters to life. Amber is definitely a narrator I would listen to again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

She has worked on Offspring, The Warriors, McLeod's Daughters, Rescue: Special Ops and All Saints. Her films have been official selections at the Sydney Film Festival, Flickerfest and many more.

Book Review: THE LOST JEWELS by Kirsty Manning

ABOUT THE BOOK

From the author of The Jade Lily comes a thrilling modern-day treasure hunt brimming with family secrets.

Why would someone bury a bucket of precious jewels and gemstones and never return?

In the summer of 1912, a workman's pickaxe strikes through the basement floor of an old tenement house in Cheapside, London, uncovering a cache of unimaginably valuable treasure that quickly disappears again.

Present day. When respected jewellery historian, Kate Kirby, receives a call about the Cheapside jewels, she knows she's on the brink of the experience of a lifetime.

As Kate peels back the layers of London's stories of plague, fire and political turmoil, she is forced to explore long-buried family secrets. Secrets concerning Essie, her great-grandmother, and her life in Edwardian London. Soon, Kate's past and present threaten to collide and the truths about her family lie waiting to be revealed.

Inspired by a true story, The Lost Jewels unfolds an incredible story of mystery, thievery, sacrifice and hope through the generations of one family.

MY THOUGHTS

I was already familiar with the Cheapside Hoard, and had even seen the jewels in person at an exhibition some years ago. In 1912, a pile of jewels is found buried in the cellar of an old house that’s being excavated. The jewels are hundreds of years old. How did they get there? Who owns them? What is their origin? How’s that for a mystery to try and solve?!

In THE LOST JEWELS, Manning weaves a fictional story around the few known facts about the jewels. The story moves between the present day to the time of their discovery in 1912 and all the way back to the mid 17th century when some of the jewels are first mined.

I found the story to be highly engaging as mysteries are solved and present day connections to the jewels are revealed.

The Cheapside Hoard is still a mystery in many ways, and Manning doesn’t attempt to answer all the questions. What she does achieve is a credible and entertaining story that will please readers of historical fiction. Additionally, there’s a great list of further reading for those us whose imagination has been fired up after reading this book.

THE LOST JEWELS is the first Kirsty Manning I’ve read, and it certainly won’t be the last.
