Book Review: TEACHER I WANT TO DATE by Mia Kayla

Release Date: February 13

Dear V̵e̵r̵y̵ ̵H̵o̵t̵  Crazy Woman,
You didn’t have to call the cops on me.
I was just looking after my niece.
Okay… maybe I shouldn't have been spying on her date. But I know how teenage boys think and what they want.
Did it make you feel good scolding me in front of everyone for just being a good uncle?
B̵e̵c̵a̵u̵s̵e̵ ̵d̵a̵m̵n̵,̵ ̵y̵o̵u̵ ̵s̵u̵r̵e̵ ̵l̵o̵o̵k̵e̵d̵ ̵g̵o̵o̵d̵ ̵d̵o̵i̵n̵g̵ ̵i̵t̵.̵
I’m almost positive you were cussing me out and if I understood a lick of Spanish, I’d have ̵s̵h̵u̵t̵ ̵y̵o̵u̵ ̵u̵p̵ ̵w̵i̵t̵h̵ ̵a̵ ̵k̵i̵s̵s̵ told you exactly what I thought about your meddling, even if you are her teacher.
In fact, I’d like to schedule a d̵a̵t̵e̵ ̵o̵v̵e̵r̵ ̵d̵i̵n̵n̵e̵r̵ ̵a̵n̵d̵ ̵w̵i̵n̵e̵ parent teacher conference to discuss our differing views on raising the youth of today s̵o̵ ̵w̵e̵ ̵a̵r̵e̵ ̵o̵n̵ ̵t̵h̵e̵ ̵s̵a̵m̵e̵ ̵p̵a̵g̵e̵ ̵w̵h̵e̵n̵ ̵w̵e̵ ̵h̵a̵v̵e̵ ̵c̵h̵i̵l̵d̵r̵e̵n̵—̵p̵r̵e̵f̵e̵r̵a̵b̵l̵y̵ ̵t̵o̵g̵e̵t̵h̵e̵r̵.

My Thoughts

TEACHER I WANT TO DATE was my first Mia Kayla book. I found it to be highly entertaining and such a fun read. I'll certainly be looking out for more of her books.

Gabby Cruz and Mason Brisken clash – and clash often – throughout the book and their interactions often had me grinning and laughing. The banter between them is gold. They are so earnest and painfully honest with each other that I did wonder if they would ever lower their barriers to let each other into their lives. Never fear! There are some very romantic moments and acts of love that will never have me questioning how strongly they feel for one another.

There is plenty of involvement from both Mason’s family and Gabby’s interwoven through the storyline but they always plays a supporting role, and never overtake the story.

If you’re looking for a happy-ever after read with plenty of laughs and a sincere romance, definitely add TEACHER I WANT TO DATE to your list.

THE AFFAIR by J.L Berg

ABOUT THE BOOK

There are some paths in your life you’re never meant to take. Yet, by some twist of fate, you find yourself on the forbidden road all the same.

Those are the words I stumble upon when I unearth a hidden journal that once belonged to my grandmother.   A hidden journal that details a heartbreaking affair with her husband’s brother. It’s a family secret I’m unprepared to deal with, especially when my own life begins to parallel hers.

Sawyer Gallagher was never on my radar. The moment I met his younger brother, I was taken. Done for. Love-drunk.   But, some things aren't meant to last and at the age of thirty-three, I find myself divorced, penniless and living with my parents.

When Sawyer stops by our family’s antique store, asking for a job, I figure: Why the heck not? Life can’t get much worse.   It doesn’t take long to realize just how different the Gallagher brothers are. Sawyer is kind, supportive, and, oh, did I mention sexy as hell?

In a small town like ours, I can’t help but ask myself… Can I fall for my former brother-in-law? Or is this just history repeating itself?

EXCERPT

You know the expression, sweating like a whore in church?
That was me exactly ten minutes after arriving home when it finally dawned on me that I was going on a real, legit date. My chest began to heave. Every inch of me was damp, and my mouth was dryer than the Sahara Desert.
This was it.
A date.
Sawyer wasn’t just casually popping over to bombard me with a flurry of questions or to help me with my grandmother’s journal. There would be no couches and blankets to hide behind, no dinner preparation to occupy us.
Nope.
Just the two of us. In a restaurant. With actual people.
“Holy crap on a cracker, what was I thinking?” I asked the dead plant in my living room.
It had no answers. Mostly because it was plant. And it was dead.
Okay, I just needed to keep calm.
I needed to keep calm and make a list.
To-do lists always kept me cool under pressure.
So, first things first.
What did one do to prepare for a date? It had been ages since I’d actually been on one, so my knowledge was rusty at best, but thanks to my heavy dose of Netflix bingeing, I’d watched just about every romantic comedy known to man in the last few months.
And if there was one thing rom-coms were known for, it was a glow-up montage—an opportunity for the heroine to go from zero to hottie in under a minute, making her downright irresistible to her potential mate.
The upside to this cheesy cliché was that it gave this rusty heroine the refresher she needed.
And the first thing I needed was makeup.
Lots of makeup. My dress was obviously already picked out. Hopefully, the weeks of pizza-eating wouldn’t cause me to bust the zipper. I guessed we’d soon find out.
Taking the steps two at a time, I marched my butt into the bathroom and turned on the shower. I wasn’t sure why; I didn’t particularly need a shower. I’d taken one that morning, and to be honest, I wasn’t that sweaty from my mini freak-out, but the idea of hot, running water soothed me.
And I needed some soothing.
Of course, I didn’t think about the fact that hot water on top of my hair would also constitute me having to restyle it.
“Shit!” I yelled the moment the water hit my nearly perfect curls.
Well, too late now. I guessed I should add a blow-dry and a curling session to my list of things to do.
Now that I’d basically doubled my to-do list, the soothing feeling of the shower did little for my stress relief. Finishing up quickly, I dried up, threw my now-sopping-wet hair into a towel, and found my way into my bedroom.
Plopping down on the bed, I let out a heavy sigh.
Why did people do this?
Was it worth it to get all dressed up, put on a crap-ton of makeup, and spend a fortune on dinner, only to have a few hours alone with someone?
Thinking about those few brief moments with Sawyer today—the way his eyes had lit up when we spoke, the heavenly feeling of his hands on my body—I couldn’t help but smile.
Yeah, it was worth it.
It was definitely worth it.

Book Review: RIGHT KIND OF WRONG by Sara Rider

ABOUT THE BOOK

When Julia Hardin is hired to plan the local library’s annual fundraiser, it’s exactly the chance she needs to take her event planning business to the next level. With a shoestring budget and ridiculously tight timeline, it won’t be easy to pull off, but Julia has never shied away from a challenge before. Then again, she’s never met a challenge quite like Fergus MacNair, the town’s hot, grumpy librarian who’s determined to thwart her plans at every turn.

Fergus is willing to do almost anything to bring in more funds to support vital library programming. But nothing about working with Julia, a woman who gets under his skin like no other, is easy. Not her bossy attitude, not her over-the-top decorations, and most certainly not the way she sparks an uncontrollable desire inside of him. But when she accidentally returns a library book with a sexy doodle of him for a bookmark, he realizes just how unprepared he is for this partnership.
When Fergus discovers her doodle, Julia is certain this is one disaster she’ll never recover from. But when Fergus responds with a naughty drawing of his own, these complete opposites might just find a common language after all.

MY THOUGHTS

RIGHT KIND OF WRONG by Sara Rider is one of those ‘still waters run deep’ romances. It’s not showy or loud or over the top. It’s contemplative, quiet and reflective. It’s certainly romantic and often funny.

When event planner, Julia Hardin, and the ‘Sexy Highlander Librarian’, Fergus McNair are forced to work together at the library’s annual Valentine’s Day fundraising event, it’s a clash of wills between the two. Yes, an attraction has been simmering but them but being stubborn and headstrong are traits they share, so any relationship was going to suffer bumps along the way.

I really enjoyed getting to know Julia and Fergus. They’re a tad insecure, both feeling a little lost at times but this just made them all the more relatable. Their romance is a lovely mixture of sweet and steamy and I definitely wanted this deserving pair to get their happy ever after.

Heartfelt, funny and romantic. Recommended.

Book Review: WEEKEND WIFE by Erin McCarthy

WW - BT banner

“The perfect, irresistible romantic comedy!” —Erin Nicholas, New York Times bestselling author

WEEKEND WIFE, an all-new sassy and quirky stand-alone rom com from New York Times bestselling author Erin McCarthy, is available now!

WeekendWife FOR WEB

Billionaire businessman in need of a fake fiancée…

It should be the easiest job ever for an out-of-work actress, right?
All I have to do is pose as Grant Caldwell (the Third)’s fiancé for a fancy-pants weekend in the Hamptons. Easy. Wear designer clothing and sip champagne? Don’t mind if I do. Flirting with Grant? It’s so delicious I should be paying him.
Nothing can go wrong as long as I can just keep my hands off of him.
But that’s the hard part. And I do mean hard.
Because Grant is sexy.
And bossy.
And surprisingly sweet, a real rarity in his pretentious family.
Oops. I’m not as good at faking it as I thought. Or maybe they call this method acting. Because it’s getting harder to figure out where my character ends and I begin…
It just might be the role of a lifetime.

MY THOUGHTS

If you’re after something light to read that will lift your mood, give WEEKEND WIFE by Erin McCarthy a go. It’s a lot of fun!

When Grant Caldwell’s professional life is put at risk because his single status is seen as detrimental, he sees no choice but to play along until he gets the top job. He’s certainly angry at being manipulated but he’s already got a prospect for the job of a fiancée for the weekend.

Enter Leah Romano, actress-slash-waitress who is waiting for her big break on Broadway. She’s also the person who’s been serving Grant his pancake breakfast each Wednesday for the last six months.

Grant and Leah work so well as a pair. Beyond the wealth and the good looks, these two talk to each other; they open up, they converse and show their vulnerabilities. Coupled with the physical chemistry between them, this book ticks so many boxes of what I look out for in a romance book.

I definitely recommend this book and I’ll certainly be on the lookout for more of this author’s work.

MY THOUGHTS

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT by J.T. Geissinger is ideal for readers who want an undemanding and light-hearted read.

It’s the story of your typical misunderstood bad boy crossing paths with the buttoned up heroine. They clash, the sparks fly, they learn lessons about themselves and each other.
It’s entertaining but it never really rises above the many other books telling a similar tale.

There is a balance in the humour dotted throughout the book and the serious nature of some of the character’s revelations along the way. Having said this, some of it was repetitive and I think the book could have been slimmed down to provide a faster-paced story.

There’s a cast of supporting characters who play the roles of angels and villains as required. They add to the entertainment without taking focus away from out couple.
