We both put love on hold until now. How long will love wait for us?
Three-forty-five in the morning: unknown number calling.
Send the stranger on their way and go back to sleep, right? Except – his gruff voice made me think twice.
I was a small girl with big dreams. I juggled college, charity, and a job while dodging an annoying ex. Getting to know a guy? That was way down on my list. So I had every intention of ignoring sexy Joel Thomas when he woke me up.
But he wouldn’t let me.
When did texting and calling turn into feelings?
We kept our identities a secret and didn’t see each other.
Yet, we fell in love.
Will our chemistry stand the test of reality?

My Thoughts
Love, On Hold is a solid debut from Mia Miller. The book
could have veered onto much darker paths but I appreciated that the author kept
the tone light and upbeat for the most part.
This is Leonie and Joel’s story. Leonie is driven, focused
on the future and likes when everything goes to plan. Joel has spent years
observing his domineering father’s numerous relationships which is why he runs
from anything resembling a relationship. Joel is not part of Leonie’s plan.
Leonie might be the person Joel doesn’t want to run away from.
This felt like a coming of age story. Even having lived
through significant traumatic life events, there’s a naiveté to Leonie and Joel
that fits their age group; they had moments of great clarity mixed in with
moments of foolishness.
I enjoyed the writing but I did feel the pacing was somewhat
off. For the first half, communication between Leonie and Joel occurs via text
messaging and phone calls. I thought these barriers kept them from getting to
know one another. We get the banter and sexual innuendos but I was missing
that deeper connection. When they do meet, the opportunity to delve deeper is
set aside for more dramatic plot lines that I felt took the focus away from
Leonie and Joel.
I enjoyed the addition of Amaya (Leonie’s nutty BFF) and
Levi (Joel’s housemate). I would be interested in reading more about Levi, who
I thought was quite an interesting character.
I look forward to reading future books by Mia Miller. There
was a teaser for her upcoming book Truly Yours which definitely piqued my
interest.
