Well, I should clarify that I love him on paper because if he was real I would be keeping a wide berth from such a person. He is one nasty, callous, and controlling being.

LJ Shen has done a brilliant job of weaving together a story of two incredibly different people who, for different reasons, are both circling the bottom of the drain. Indigo Bellamy may be doing her utmost to rise from the wreck that her life has become while Alex is doing whatever he can think of to keep further spiralling out of control.

When Indigo is hired for three months to be Alex’s sobriety companion, his first instinct is to get rid of her like the many other that preceded her. He takes delight in tormenting Indigo and shows no remorse. Frankly, he treats those around him little better.

As LJ Shen peels back the layers of Alex and indigo we get to know two very complex and fascinating individuals. Indigo is a strong, resilient and compassionate woman but the star for me is Alex. I found him and his story mesmerising.

The support characters are well developed and are integrated into the plot so well that several times I found myself stunned at the turn of events. There were several ‘I never saw that coming’ moments. I was absorbed by the power struggles in this book; the power a person holds, both real and perceived, and the power that others (scarily) hold. It was a mind bender.

And it’s funny. There are large doses of British style sarcasm and humour peppered throughout.

I can easily see Midnight Blue remaining one of my top reads for 2018.
